Two-Stroke Vs. Four-Stroke

When shopping for a new dirt bike, the first thing you’ll need to decide is whether you want a two-stroke or four-stroke engine. If you’ve never owned or ridden a dirt bike before, we highly recommend striking with a four-stroke engine. These models are a bit heavier, providing you with some necessary stability, and aren’t as powerful as two-stroke engines. While this may seem like a downside, an overpowered engine is actually a beginner rider’s worst nightmare as— more often than not—new riders end up overwhelmed by the impressive engine power and end up crashing. 

On the other hand, if you have quite a bit of experience riding a dirt bike, or are interested in racing with your new vehicle, a two-stroke engine is the perfect choice! These models are small and lightweight to create better handling and will have no trouble tackling high speeds or getting you over large jumps if you’re interested in performing tricks. 

Model Type

Dirt bikes can be broken down into a number of smaller categories, including dual-sport, super-sport, standard, and youth. Standard dirt bikes are the most common models and are able to handle any off-road terrain you want to tackle. Dual-sport models are similar at first glance, but can actually handle both on and off-road riding if you’re interested in traveling on smooth pavement. Super-sport models are often designed specifically for racing and include powerful engines and aerodynamic bodies. Finally, youth models are almost exactly the same as a standard dirt bike. However, these models are a few sizes smaller to make them accessible for younger children and often have slightly weaker engines.
